Trash Collection & Recycling

Trash Collection

The collection of normal household waste is provided by the Hatboro Borough Public Works Department, per the trash collection schedule.  Please refer to the zone information on the top of this page.

Trash containers must be placed at the curb for collection between 7:00 p.m. on the night before your collection day and 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.
Please do not place trash containers at the curb for collection on holidays. When a holiday occurs on your scheduled collection day, collection will take place on your next scheduled collection day.  The holidays are: New Year's Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, the day after Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.

If one of the above holidays falls on a Saturday, Borough Hall and Public Works will be closed on the Friday before. If the holiday falls on a Sunday, Borough Hall and Public Works will be closed on the following Monday.

The following items are not collected with regular trash collection: live coals; building materials left by contractors; broken concrete; large stones; bricks; tree stumps; roofing shingles; asbestos; contaminated soils; hazardous wastes; kerosene; paint thinners; gasoline; cans used for gasoline storage; propane tanks; insecticides; weed killers; motor oils; medical waste or any other items identified as hazardous waste.

Please note that the Public Works Department does not collect any pressurized cylinders (barbeque, small propane, O2 tanks, helium cylinders, Freon, etc.) during regular trash, bulk trash, or recycling collection. These items are considered hazardous and are prohibited from collection by Borough Ordinance. If placed out for collection, these items will be removed from the trash collection stream and labeled with an orange "REJECTED" sticker. Residents who wish to dispose of these cylinders can drop them off at any of Montgomery County's special Hazardous Waste Collection Events. A schedule of these collection events for the current year can be found below. For any questions regarding the proper disposal of pressurized cylinders, please contact Borough Hall at 215-443-9100.

Recycling

The Borough of Hatboro offers single stream recycling, meaning recyclable items can be comingled when placed curbside for collection.

Hatboro is now recycling plastic. Items such as plastic soda and milk bottles, laundry detergent, fabric softener, dish soap bottles, and cooking oil bottles, to name a few, can now be placed in the same bin as the other glass and can recycling items. If the plastic item has a number 1 through 7, or a recycling symbol on it, the item is recyclable and can be placed your recycling container for collection. Lids for plastic containers must be removed, and we do not accept plastic toys and plastic hoses.

Please do not place broken glass, window glass, light bulbs, mirrors, porcelain, ceramics, blue glass, styrofoam, plastic bags, food, hoses or wires, paint cans or aerosol cans in your recycling container.

Newspapers, computer paper, cardboard, cereal boxes, junk mail, magazines and catalogues will also be collected on your scheduled recycling day. These items may be comingled with other recyclable items when placed curbside for collection. Newspapers can also be tied or placed into paper shopping bags.

All boxes must be broken down and tied. Do not include wax paper, foil, wax-coated boxes or plastic bags with your recycling. Tied items must not be thicker than 16 inches, and must not be longer or wider than 36 inches.

For information on recyclable items and objects that should not be placed in your recycling, download our recycling handout by clicking here

Bulk Items

The disposal of large items such as box springs, mattresses and other household furniture and appliances, requires a special bulk permit that can be purchased at Borough Hall. These items cannot be included with regular trash. These items are collected on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.

Yard Waste

Yard waste is collected on all scheduled trash days. All leaves, grass clippings, sticks, weeds and yard waste must be placed in a paper biodegradable bag.  Lawn and leaf bags may be purchased at Borough Hall for $0.50 per bag, or a bundle of 50 bags for $20.00.  Residents may also purchase and use biodegradable bags available at Lowe's, Home Depot and other retailers.

Vine, hedge, and tree trimmings must be tied securely in bundles not to exceed 4 feet in length and 2 feet in diameter. There is a 10 bag limit per collection day, and no bag may weigh more than 50 pounds.

Please note the Borough cannot accept dirt, mud, rocks and similar materials as a part of yard waste collection. Residents must provide for the proper relocation and/or disposal of these materials.

Please note that raking leaves into the street and the burning of leaves, brush, trash, garbage and wood is strictly prohibited. The Borough will issue a citation for open burning.

Electronic Recycling

Pennsylvania law requires recycling of electronic consumer products. These items include computers, televisions, cell phones and electronic games or devices, or specifically items that are smaller than 18 inches by 12 inches by 12 inches, and weighing less than 50 pounds.

All residents must call Borough Hall at (215) 443-9100 when wishing to dispose of these electronic consumer products and schedule a pickup. The electronic products will be picked up on the same day as bulk trash collection days which are the first and third Wednesdays of each month. The small electronic items should be placed at the curb in a recycling bin. For up to date prices on bulk tash and electronic recycling collection permits, please reference our fee schedule under the general information tab.

Large bulk item and electronic recycling pickups must be scheduled and paid for at least one business day in advance. Please contact Borough Hall at 215-443-9100 if you have any questions.
